Brown Trout

I've been fascinated by Brown Trout for as long as I can remember. For years, I would go fishing at Twin Lakes in Bridgeport, California, where mounted Brown Trout caught by A.C. Cole hung on the walls of local establishments. At the time, these fish held state records, and seeing them made a lasting impression on me.

I've always wanted to catch a Brown Trout like those, and I'm still on the hunt for that trophy fish. I've caught a few over the years, but the one I'm looking for has eluded me. These fish have captured my imagination since I was very young.

• Scientific Name: Salmo trutta

• Habitat: Cold, clear rivers, streams, and lakes. Brown Trout can live their entire lives in freshwater, while some populations migrate between freshwater and the ocean.

• Range: Native to Europe and parts of Asia and North Africa; they have been introduced to many regions around the world, including North America.

• Typical Size: Commonly 12–20 inches, although much larger fish can occur. Trophy Brown Trout can exceed 30 inches and weigh well over 10 pounds.

• Diet: Aquatic insects, crustaceans, small fish, and other aquatic organisms. Larger Brown Trout often become increasingly predatory, feeding heavily on fish.

• Known For: Their distinctive golden-brown coloration, dark spots surrounded by lighter halos, and impressive ability to survive and grow in a wide variety of freshwater environments. Brown Trout are also renowned among anglers for being wary, powerful, and notoriously difficult to catch.
