Discus Fish

Discus are some of the most popular aquarium fish out there. However, these fish require the right conditions to truly thrive. My brother had a couple of them growing up, and I would watch them meander through the aquarium with the fluorescent lights guiding their way. What a beautiful display. Their color combinations are endless, and you won't find a more rewarding fish to keep.

• Habitat: Warm, slow-moving freshwater areas of the Amazon Basin, including sheltered areas around submerged roots, rocks, and vegetation

• Range: Amazon River Basin of South America, primarily Brazil

• Typical size: About 6–8 inches; some species can reach around 8 inches

• Diet: Worms, crustaceans, insects, insect larvae, planktonic invertebrates, and some plant matter

• Known for: Their distinctive round, laterally compressed bodies, brilliant colors, intricate patterns, peaceful nature, and graceful swimming
