Why I Chose This Animal

This whale goes back to my younger days of looking through my View-Master and the SeaWorld reel. I would look at the Beluga picture most days and get excited, hoping that someday I would see one in person. When it finally happened, I wanted to stay much longer than my parents wanted to. This animal has an incredible personality and a majestic aura that has always fascinated me.

  • Habitat: Arctic and sub-Arctic marine waters, especially coastal areas, estuaries, and shallow seas

  • Range: Arctic and sub-Arctic waters of the Northern Hemisphere, including Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Russia

  • Typical size: Adults commonly reach 10–15 feet; males are generally larger than females

  • Diet: Fish, squid, shrimp, crabs, clams, and other marine invertebrates

  • Known for: Their brilliant white color, rounded forehead, lack of a dorsal fin, remarkable vocalizations, and highly social behavior
